Income Tax
Reading your Form 26AS and AIS
Form 26AS shows the tax deducted on your behalf and the tax you have paid. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) goes further: it lists salary, interest, dividends, securities and property transactions reported about you.
Check both before you file. If a figure looks wrong, ask the deductor to correct it, or submit feedback on the AIS. Filing without checking is one of the most common reasons for mismatches and notices.

Income Tax
Advance tax, explained
Advance tax means paying income tax during the year instead of all at the end. It applies if your tax after TDS is ₹10,000 or more. The usual instalments fall on 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March, covering roughly 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% of the year’s estimated tax.
Small businesses and professionals on presumptive taxation generally pay in a single instalment by 15 March. Interest is charged if you fall short, so estimate early.

GSTR‑1 and GSTR‑3B: what each one does
GSTR-1 lists your sales, and your customers use it to claim credit. GSTR-3B is the summary return where you pay the tax. Monthly filers usually file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month.
The two should tell the same story. A mismatch between them, or with your purchase data, is a common trigger for notices, so reconcile every month before you file.

How long should you keep your records?
Tax, GST and company laws each require records to be kept for several years, in some cases up to eight. Keep invoices, bank statements, returns, acknowledgements and agreements in an organised folder, digital copies included, and do not discard anything until your adviser confirms.
Good records are your best defence in any scrutiny.

Five signs your books need attention
- Your bank statement has not been reconciled for over a month.
- GST returns are filed without matching them to your books.
- You cannot tell your cash position without asking the accountant.
- TDS deposits or filings slip past their due dates.
- Last year’s accounts are still unfinished.
Any two of these? It is time for a review.
